How does the food you eat affect cancer?

The leading cause of death is cancer

Hello, I’m glad to welcome you 🙂

Today we can talk a little about how does the food you eat affect cancer? Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, right behind cardiovascular diseases. It is the most vicious disease that swallows you whole and your darlings. But, just like every other disease, it can be prevented, slowed down, or even cured. Read more

What makes cancer one of the leading causes of death has much to do with the food we’re eating. Of course, there are some other factors, too, but in this article, we are going to talk about how does the food you eat affects cancer.

How Does Cancer Grow?

Cancer starts with a single cell that is degenerated due to various factors affecting the cell’s genome. One of the reasons is genetics and, in that case, there isn’t much that we can do. However, there are some other environmental aspects we can change, such as our lifestyle.

As I said, there are many other factors affecting cancer, such as viruses, and other infections, stress, lack of physical activity, and mental health.

However, what we are going to talk about in this article is food and how it makes cancer develop and grow. Food is something that we usually take for granted, especially at this time when fast food is so normalized.

Taking care of what we eat takes so much time from our work or maybe even life that we put it totally on the side. Yet, food is essential since it goes through every cell of our bodies and in that way, affects them. Beyond body

It can worsen them to that level to become cancer, meaning it can change the genome, it can activate cells to grow faster, and it may stop regular cell deaths, causing cancer to form. After cancer develops, it will need food to grow, so even after getting cancer, it is necessary to learn what is the proper thing to eat and what can cause exacerbations.

What Are the Most Common Types of Cancer in the World?

What is the most common type of cancer in the world depends on the region we’re talking about, but in general, the most common types are colorectal carcinoma, lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, liver cancer, oesophageal cancer, and stomach cancer.

The rest of them are usually the second deposit of first cancer, also called metastasis. One of the main delusions about the connection between food and cancer is that only colorectal and gastrointestinal cancers, in general, are connected with food. However, that is big misinformation.

Every cancer has some food that can make them progress, meaning that it causes cancer to be bigger and destroy more organs. Some food is protective or even used as a preventive way to stop cancer from developing in the first place.

In this article, I will explain the connection between the most common types of cancer and food, starting with colorectal carcinoma.

What’s the Link Between Food and Cancer?

It is well known that fibers are good for digestion but various studies show that it is one of the best preventions for colorectal carcinoma, and also even if there is a colorectal carcinoma, it can cause its course to slow down.

Fibers are found in such food as legumes, seeds, and nuts.

Here are some examples and also grams of fiber the indicated food has: one cup of split peas has 16 grams, one cup of lentils, has 15.5 grams, and one cup of black beans has 15 grams of fiber, which shows that this food is good for your gastrointestinal health in general, not just for cancer.

Vegetables and fruits are also good for your health, and how important they are you learn even as a small child. Lucky us, researchers discovered that both of them are also good in preventing, and you can eat them while having cancer.

It is shown that vegetables solemnly as fruits don’t affect the creation or progression of cancer but combined they are a perfect match for a good and healthy life. Model life

Meat lovers, I have to disappoint you, but red meat and processed meat have a bad effect on the digestive system. Of course, you can indulge in these amazing products sometimes, but not that often, especially not every day.

The good thing about calcium is that it is good for bones, muscles, nerves, and surprisingly for your gut. Milk and especially yogurt intake also benefits your gut and prevents causing gut cancer, in general.

Also, when we’re talking about food we can’t forget fatty acids that are actually very bad for your gut, and can even be one of the causes of gut cancer. I speak primarily about stearic acid, which is the most common acid found in plants and animals.

The Mediterranean diet as a solution

All these can be found in a proper Mediterranean diet. Gut health and also prevention primarily of colorectal cancer is highly connected with the consumption of a Mediterranean diet, many studies have confirmed this constitute.

Breast Cancer and Food

The second most common cancer is cancer found primarily in women, namely breast cancer. It can also be found in men, but much less often. Of course, we also have a good connection between fruit and vegetable intake here. Even freshly squeezed fruit juices have a good impact.

However, when it comes to vegetables, some are better than others. Leafy, fruiting vegetables and fresh tomatoes and their consumption are very good at preventing breast cancer.

Also, here we have a vegetarian and vegan population winning over protection from this type of cancer, and it is a very significant number, compared to the meat-eating population.

Fish intake and just fish have not been connected to prevention, but once again Mediterranean diet is a big plus in prevention here. What is interesting when preventing breast cancer in postmenopausal women, a bigger caffeinated coffee intake decreases the probability of getting cancer developing. menopause transition

Now let’s talk about food that promotes breast cancer.

It is mostly fatty acids, but not all of them. To be more specific, it is two of them. Not to get scientific anymore, these fatty acids are found in milk, cheese, yogurt, and most importantly, margarine and fast food.

Of course, high saturated sugar food is definitely bad enough for your health but is also one of the catalysts for forming breast cancer, so you should slow down with sugar intake.

Lung Cancer And Food

Next in line is lung cancer, commonly connected with smoking and this is for reason. Smoking is one of the biggest triggers for getting lung cancer developing, but some food intake can also help with that. Lucky us, we can prevent it. At least, in some measure. Easy way

Of course, the first step is to stop smoking, which is not that easy for most smokers.

Again, fruit consumption is highly connected with the prevention of lung cancer. Even though I haven’t spoken yet about vitamins intake and supplementation (my first rule is mostly if you can take it by food, you don’t need supplementation), there is a positive connection between a high level of vitamin B6 and K2, also with using methionine.

Prostate Cancer And Food

Prostate cancer can be found only in men due to only men having this organ. This is only cancer that has no connection with using vegetables and fruits, but studies have shown that citrus fruit is good for prevention.

Dairy products were linked positively with increased risk for the creation of cancer, especially the use of yogurt. Also, proteins from dairy food have much impact on increased cancer risk. Here, we are talking about casein, which many people use as a supplement when working out.

Total protein intake was not connected with cancer generation. But getting back to dietary food, calcium is also a provocateur for prostate cancer. Overall dietary products are terrible in this case and only cause the development of cancer.

Cancer And Alcohol Consumption

We haven’t spoken about alcohol consumption, but I presume that you know that there is a positive link between all types of cancers and alcohol intake.

Let’s be precise, shall we?

Drinking beer is highly connected with colorectal cancer, but drinking wine hasn’t shown that kind of efficiency. Of course, it also depends on how much wine you’re taking in.

Generally speaking, drinking alcohol affects the development of colorectal cancer. When we’re talking about breast cancer, there is also a great connection between high alcohol intake and the development of cancer.

What is interesting are the results about lung and prostate cancer, where it hasn’t shown any connection between alcohol intake. According to studies, even the development of this type of cancer has nothing to do with alcohol intake.

Cancer And Soft Drinks Intake

Soft drinks are one of the most loved drinks in the world, starting with children and ending with adults, but they’re not good for you and your health.

I’m sure most of you already know that, but the link between colorectal cancer and drinking these beverages is so huge that next time you want to drink something like that, I suggest you reconsider it and maybe start drinking more water or freshly squeezed juices.

Of course, there have to be some exceptions, but I recommend you be careful with that. On the other hand, prostate cancer has nothing to do with soft drink consumption, which is one of the many odd things linked to this type of cancer, as you can see.

Conclusion

A healthy diet and living a healthy life, in general, is a big plus when preventing cancer, but also don’t forget to do checkups from time to time. That’s the best thing you could do for yourself and your health.

Get that Mediterranean diet book, start cooking, drinking water, and live life with full lungs. If you have any symptoms, I beg you to go to the doctor and check it. The first stage of diagnosing is the best stage for prognosis.

  2. Thanks a million, Zveki for such a helpful article. To be honest with you, I am scared. I lost three of my family members to cancer. I have seen the anguish and the pain that they had to go through. Not just them, but their families too. And it’s not a pretty site.

I wish more people would read articles such as yours. As they say, you are what you eat. And we take it for granted, that we will be okay. But if we consume bad foods over and over again, then we are asking for trouble.

I was waiting for the part about prostrate cancer I am glad that you offered such helpful information. Now it’s up to me to implement what I learned.

  3. This is such an informative article Zveki.
Not surprised about fast food and processed food being contributors to giving life to cancer cells!. I already practice a Mediterranean diet, and eating lots of fiber and fruits really make a difference in gut health. It is interesting to learn that apart from aiding digestion, fiber can also slow down colorectal carcinoma.
    Thanks for the great info!
